Alabama's state flower is the camellia, adopted in 1959, a winter bloomer, which tells you something about the climate here. Camellias flower from November through March when much of the country has nothing in the garden at all, and Alabama growers supply them into the florist trade.
The long, humid growing season means locally grown material runs later into autumn than in most states, and spring arrives early: expect Alabama tulips and daffodils weeks ahead of the Midwest. Summer heat is the constraint rather than frost, so hydrangeas and gardenias do particularly well here and are worth asking for by name at a local shop.
