Which guide do you need?

Six guides, each written for a different problem. The flower pages in the directory cover one bloom at a time. These cut across all of them.

Your last bunch died in three days. Almost always the water and the stem, not the flowers. How to make your flowers last longer covers what actually extends vase life, including the things that do nothing and the one common tip that kills daffodils' neighbors.

You are buying for a wedding. The budget conversation is the hard part and it happens before anything is chosen. Choosing wedding flowers goes through what drives the cost, what to book and when, and where the money is better spent.

You want to arrange them yourself. Arrangement tips and techniques is the mechanics: conditioning, proportion, and building a shape that holds up instead of collapsing overnight.

You do not know what to send. Start with the ten most popular flowers and why people choose them, then check what the colors say, because color carries more meaning than the flower in a lot of cases and it is easy to send the wrong message by accident.

You are working out what is available. Best flowers for each season explains what genuinely has a season, which is a shorter list than most people expect. Our seasonal page has the month by month version.

Where these sit next to everything else

Three different things on this site answer three different questions. The guides here are about a task: keeping flowers alive, planning a wedding, building an arrangement. The flower directory is about one species at a time, with how to buy it, when it is in season, what to use instead and whether it is safe around pets. The care guide is the short practical version for flowers already sitting on your counter.

None of it sells flowers. When you know what you want, find a florist near you and speak to somebody who has the cooler in front of them.

Does the little sachet of flower food actually do anything?

Yes, and the part that matters is not the sugar. It is three things: a sugar to feed the bloom, a biocide to stop bacteria blocking the stem, and an acidifier that lowers the water's pH so it can travel up the stem in the first place. That last one does most of the work. Use the whole sachet in the amount of water it was measured for, because half a sachet in a full vase is close to no sachet at all.

Are supermarket flowers worse than a florist's?

Not worse, bred for a different job. Supermarket lines are chosen to survive a long supply chain and sit on a shelf, so they favor varieties that travel and hold, which usually means less scent and a tighter, more uniform bloom. A florist buys for what is good that week and conditions it properly on arrival, which is why the same flower often opens better and lasts longer from a shop. For a Tuesday bunch on the kitchen table the supermarket is fine. For something that has to be right, it is not the same purchase.

Why does the same flower cost so differently?

Four things, and only one of them is the shop. Season, because out of season means air freight. Stem length and grade, since a long straight rose and a short one can be the same variety at very different prices. Holiday demand, which hits specific flowers rather than all of them, so red roses climb in February while everything else stays normal. And how much hand work the arrangement takes, which is labour, not flowers.
