Arkansas took the apple blossom as its state flower in 1901, when the northwest of the state was a major apple-growing region. The orchards have largely gone, but the emblem stayed.
Arkansas sits in a useful middle ground for cut flowers: warm enough for a long season, cool enough that spring bulbs perform properly. Local growers supply zinnias, sunflowers and dahlias through summer into early autumn, and these are worth asking for. Dahlias in particular travel badly, so the ones you find in an Arkansas shop in September are almost certainly local and will be better than anything shipped.
