The District of Columbia's floral emblem is the American Beauty rose, adopted in 1925. The city's better-known flowers are the Japanese cherry trees around the Tidal Basin, gifted in 1912, which draw the spring crowds.

Washington's flower trade is shaped by what the city does: a heavy volume of corporate, diplomatic and event work alongside ordinary retail. That means more florists here than the population alone would suggest, more experience with large-scale installation, and shops that are used to short-notice, formal requests.
