Kansas took the sunflower as its state flower in 1903, and it is one of the few state emblems that is also a major commercial cut flower.
Sunflower season here runs from midsummer into early autumn, and Kansas florists have ready access to local material through it. Ask for pollen-free varieties if the arrangement is going on a table, they are bred for the cut trade and will not drop pollen across a cloth. Outside that window Kansas follows the plains pattern: a short, productive local season and a long imported winter.
