Maryland's state flower is the black-eyed Susan, which also gives the Preakness Stakes its "Run for the Black-Eyed Susans", although the flowers used in the winner's blanket are not actually black-eyed Susans, which do not bloom until well after the May race. They are usually daisies with the centers painted.
Maryland's growing season is long and productive, and the Baltimore and suburban Washington markets support a dense, competitive florist trade. Local material runs from spring bulbs through peonies in late May to dahlias and zinnias into October.
