New Mexico's state flower is the yucca, adopted in 1927.
The high desert climate is hard on cut flowers. Low humidity pulls water out of stems quickly, so vases need topping up daily rather than every few days. Almost everything is imported, mostly through Texas and California. What New Mexico does have is a distinctive local aesthetic: chile ristras, dried material, native and southwestern arrangements that shops elsewhere would not attempt. Santa Fe in particular supports florists doing genuinely regional design work rather than the standard national repertoire.
