Ohio's state flower is the scarlet carnation, adopted in 1904 in memory of President William McKinley, who habitually wore one in his lapel and handed them to visitors.
It is a fitting emblem for a practical state: carnations are the best-value cut flower in the shop, lasting two to three weeks against a rose's one. Ohio has a productive growing season with local peonies in late May and dahlias, zinnias and chrysanthemums running to first frost, and its three metros support competitive, well-established florist trades.
