Kentucky's state flower is goldenrod, adopted in 1926, a late-summer bloomer much maligned as an allergen. That reputation is misplaced: goldenrod pollen is heavy and insect-carried, and the hay fever people blame it for is almost always ragweed, which flowers at the same time.
Kentucky's biggest flower moment is the Derby, and the state's florists build a serious trade around it. Hat work, Derby party arrangements and the roses the race is named for. Outside May, the state has a long growing season supporting local dahlias, zinnias and sunflowers well into October.
